How do I play "Road Rage" Online In Burnout Paradise?

I do not know how to play any type of game mode online other then the one where you drive around beating records (which is stupid). I already know you cant play local split screen which is incredibly stupid, but there has to be some way to play a game of burnout or race people online? Please? Otherwise I'm selling this stupid game.
